Maria Jeona Zoleta is as polluted as the islands of the Philippines. She is the “exorcist of possessed paintings,” working across painting, textiles, sculpture, performance and artist books between Manila, Tokyo, Hamburg and other crazy planets. She builds worlds contaminated with contaminated with spirits, sorcery, sex, sewage and Manila smog. At its core her painting is about procreation and pollution. She studied painting at the University of the Philippines, runs the small press Possessed Planets, and co-founded Bizarre Bookstore, a nomadic Tokyo–Manila bookshop and publishing unit. She performs as extreme.meth.in.my.bloodstream and is part of POSSESSED! @possessedclassroom, a nomadic artist-run space that pops up wherever it lands.
